Marijuana comes from parts of the female Cannabis sativa plant and has been consumed by humans for thousands of years. A chemical compound produced on the flowers/buds of the plant called tetrahydrocannabinol (commonly referred to as THC) is what causes psychoactive and medicinal effects. The possession, use and sale of the cannabis plant became illegal in most parts of the world during the early 20th century but in Amsterdam, some areas of India (near the Ganges river) and parts of the Carribean, it is traditionally and legally used.
